But perhaps without that political edge one is ccechov only with the droll amusement of characters at rest and who don’t work idolising the engagement and process of work which is crushing, absorbing and chewing up the other characters who can only dream of rest.
Not the most comforting or thrilling reads, but feel a sense of accomplishment hence the four stars vs three. If the final act of this doesn’t affect you, your heart is probably made of stone. Since I listened to a recording of a performance, I wasn’t fully successful at keeping all of the characters straight, but I was able to see some of the themes I’m reading these plays to prepare for an acting class I will be taking which will focus on the work of Chekhov. They practically mock it as an overused symbol, however, if one were to focus on it, I’ll probably describe it as artistic integrity.
